"I'm not an audiophile but I do have ears" 2010-04-01
By Peter
When I was researching speakers for my home entertainment center, I was wary about considering in-ceiling speakers, knowing that they possibly couldn't be on-par with floor-standing or bookshelf speakers. All the articles had said how bad in-ceiling speakers are; tinny, lacking depth, and generally too hollow to be taken seriously.

HOWEVER, after realizing that all of those articles were written over 3-4 years ago (which is decades as far as technology goes), I decided to look into these. They were voice-matched with my RTi speakers so it was an easy call. I ordered them with my fingers crossed and hopes high.

The installation was fairly easy, although be warned: most of the wire tracker kits on here are pretty trash. You get what you pay for when it comes to that. If you already know where your wires are though, it's fairly easy. You cut a hole based on the template they provide you, and pop the speakers in there. A few quick turns with a screw driver, and you've got yourself some professional looking in-ceiling speakers. (And I'm serious, they look PRO. People were asking us how many thousands it cost us to get them installed.)

Now to the important stuff: the sound quality. It's amazing. Seriously. We've had some of those "Bose Lifestyle" systems with the little box speakers, and these absolutely blow those away. Our current setup is a pair of older RTi floor standing speakers in the front, with a Polk Audio CSI A6 Center Channel Speaker (Single, Black) as the center channel. Then we have two of these babies in the back and it's smooth sailing in the world of home entertainment.

Bottom line: these speakers are relatively inexpensive for the sound quality they provide, and look stunning in our home theater installation. They look professional, and they also come with a detachable grille so that you can spray paint them to match your room. Highly recommended for those looking to fill out the back channels of a 5.1 with in-ceiling speakers.

"Love these!" 2008-01-15

These are worth the money if you want great sound and don't want to be cluttered with surround sound speakers. They have awesome sounds, both with television and music. We just use two in our 20' high ceilings and are thrilled with the crisp, clear sound.

"Great Looking Speaker" 2010-03-24
By Jeromie Moss (bakersfield, ca.)
If you are looking for a flushed look in your ceiling this is definitely the speaker. I wanted my speakers mounted in the ceiling and didnt want the distraction of bulky bookshelf speakers hanging down. I opted for the JBL in ceiling and i'm glad I did. Pretty simple for installation. It comes with a cutout you put on the ceiling/wall and trace the outline. Then you use a drywall saw cut the hole, place the speaker in and tighten the screws. The screws turn the locking tab mechanism that holds the speaker into the ceiling. The sound is very good not tinny as ive read with some of the Polk in ceiling speakers. IT does lack some mid range as it is a 2 way speaker but fills rich highs and good bass. Overall tinkering with the EQ on my receiver set the sound just perfect. Plenty of power for home theater use actually purchased 3 pair for a 7.1 system. You wont go wrong with these speakers!!

"Fantastic speakers!" 2009-03-16
By John D. Rowe (Jackson, WI USA)
I bought these speakers on JBL's ebay store. They were remanufactured and I got them for a steal. I bid on my speakers and got them for under $100 for the PAIR! Installation is easy once you get the speaker cable run and they sound fantastic. I was planning on getting a powered subwoofer to run off of my harmon/kardon receiver, but I really don't need it. They have plenty of bass response and the mids and highs are crystal clear. I especially like how you can swivel the tweeters to achieve optimum staging.

Nice speakers, but I ordered round ceiling speakers and I received square wall speakers. After several weeks and double the transactions, I'm hoping to get the correct speakers soon. These had very long, slow deliveries to begin with.

"Crisp clear sound" 2007-10-23
By Jeremy D. Marcum (Indianapolis, IN)
I installed a pair of these in my master bathroom and the sound is incredible! I have them hooked up to my HK Receiver and the sound is crisp and the bass is solid. In my opinion, I can not imagine a better set of ceiling speakers out there. These speakers also have movable tweeter cones so you can point the highs directly where you want them to go. I highly recommend.

"Challenging, but functional." 2010-03-02
By J. Hicks (Atlanta, GA)
It works fine - as any metal connector will. Getting it to look nice on your wall is a bit of a challenge. Each gang has metal reinforcements on the screw holes, and the included screws didn't fit in very well. I had to resort to rather forceful measures. Of course, it's behind furniture anyway, so be it.

Anyhow, it serves it's purpose. I'd give it 5 stars if it were a little more innovative than the alternative solutions.

"Extra sub-plug really useful" 2009-01-15

I used this panel to wire up 4 speakers and a stereo line link to another amp upstairs (so everything is sourced from one place). This was the only panel I found that had *TWO* RCA phono plugs (labeled Sub and Aux), which I used for Right and Left lines up to the other panel upstairs.

Saved a few bucks on this, but it seems to be of good quality and looks quite nice. There was a little extra time for manually putting the pieces all together, but I still enjoy that. If you're going to splurge, get yourself some banana plugs though for quick and easy cable swapping.

"Suprised to find excellent 8" In-Ceiling speakers at Amazon!" 2010-02-07
By R. Burgess
Recently I replaced two of the ceiling speakers in our church building. Before purchasing on-line I looked all over town trying to locate locally and was more then a little surprised to find that in a town this size, nothing was available. After searching on-line I found this great deal at Amazon. The speakers arrived when promised, were excellent quality and easy to install. I needed a speaker that was between a cheap intercom type and a super high end surround sound type. The quality for voice and music are very good. If I had to replace them again, I wouldn't hesitate to use the same speakers

"REQUIRES DOUBLE WIRING" 2010-02-17
By K. Schimanski
I bought this to install in the basement we just finished. Mostly to play music during parties and also to hook into the tv if we have parties for the "big game" etc. so the sound can be broadcast though-out the entire basement. We pre-wired three speaker locations to cover the entire 1500 sq ft.

THE GOOD:

Very easy to install. Take the little card board template, draw your circle, drill a pilot hole, and cut it out. (I used a fine tooth saw-zaw blade by hand since we had already painted the ceiling and I didn't want it to chip/scuff the ceiling, but a jig saw would have probably done fine. Either way is ok, dry wall is easy to saw. On a ladder I used one hand to hold the speaker and the other to easily make the connections. The connecters are easy to work with one hand. I then just inserted into the ceiling, pulled the screw drive our of my pocket (don't forget to do this or you will be down the ladder with your speaker dangling from wire)... screwed in four screws that snap out and then down the little brackets that hold the speaker snug to the ceiling from inside the ceiling, and inserted the grill (which covers the speaker and the screws). Easy as can be.

Another point: circles are easier to install then rectangles. If you are considering buying rectangle speakers, consider how good you are and making things square, plumb, etc. And also consider that even if you are good at it, your drywall installers, even if they worked for a good builder, may not be. So you ceiling and/or wall may not be at right angles to each other. If you install in ceiling close to a wall, or in wall close to a ceiling, you may end up with a speaker that looks crooked one way or another. And even if the walls and ceiling are all straight, it's still hard to stand on a ladder, measure the how far each corner is to your nearest reference point, set the template etc. With circles, these problems go away.

Quick wiring tip:

1. When you do the initial wiring, make sure you leave enough slack so that the wire hangs and least three feet down lower then the ceiling. It make connecting the wire to the speaker much easier when standing on a ladder to not have to be making the connections over your head. You'd rather have it waist high. So leave enough slack, it easily tucks up into the ceiling when the speaker is installed.

THE BAD:

2. I mentioned that I wired for three speakers. I bought the "Polk Audio RC60i" Since they come in pairs, I wanted to buy a single 3rd speaker instead of buying a second pair and having one left over. So I made the mistake of buying this product, the very similar "Polk Audio RC6s" for my third speaker without reading enough of the description or reviews. Based on other descriptions, and the performance of the "Polk Audio RC60i" that I did get to work. this speaker probably works fine.

HOWEVER, it requires two sets of speaker wire, not one. I of course had one set of wire to each speaker location. I now know that this is both a left and right speaker all in one little package. So it didn't work for me. I ended up buying a second set of "Polk Audio RC60i", and it now works perfectly. So if you do the same, either run two sets of wire or just buy yourself a second set of "Polk Audio RC60i"... The set is not much more money then the single "Polk Audio RC6s" anyway.

I am rating this a five based upon looks, ease of installation, and the performance of the sister product "Polk Audio RC60i" that I have installed. I am not going to rate it down because I am a dope and didn't read enough of the description or reviews before buying.

"POLK RC80i in ceiling speakers pair - good speakers, very easy installation" 2010-01-09
By KMM (Atlanta, GA United States)
I'm not a huge audio person, but I also don't want anything that sounds cheap in my home.
I had to buy 2 sets of CEILING speakers one set for rear surround sound speakers and one set for a separate pool room. I bought and installed these in the pool room. Installation was quick and straight forward. The speakers were larger than I had anticipated which made me a little nervous, but I don't even notice them now. They sound great to me.
I also paid double for a pair of Bose speakers for the rear surround sound. I REALLY wish I had skipped the extra expense and just bought these instead for that room too.

"very good for use with whole house systems" 2010-01-08
By Peter Mitchell
I installed these for a whole house music system with more than 30 rooms. For this purpose the Polk Audio RC6s in-ceiling speakers work very well. The benefit of the stereo is being able to run both channels into a single speaker from a receiver or amp. The 6.5 inch size is adequate for most rooms up to 200 square feet in size if placed properly. Placement of the RC6s in a room has a big impact on the quality and volume of the sound. In an L shaped room it would be best to use at least 2 speakers for a whole house sound system.

Installation is easy, especially using an adjustable hole cutter to make the ceiling holes. I use a Hole Pro X-305 that makes ceiling holes up to 12 inches in diameter in seconds whether I am cutting in wood T&G, sheetrock, or plaster. Being able to cut in a circular motion there is much less chance of cracking plaster and with the cutting depth control I don't need to worry about cutting something up in the ceiling I did not know about. The Hole Pro adjustable hole cutter is probably overkill for someone installing just a pair of speakers but it is a tremendous help when installing more than 2 speakers or putting in recessed can lights as well as speakers for a home theater.

Hole Pro X-305 Kit 1-7/8" to 12" infinitely adjustable twin blade Tungsten Carbide Hole Saw Cutter 6" 7" 8" 9" 10" 11" 12" holes in wood drywall plaster fiberglass OSB cement board- Use ¼ torque of hole saws and cut twice as fast

The sound quality of the Polk Audio RC6s speakers is very good but not really something I would recommend for someone who is primarily going to be listening to music, even with a subwoofer in the room. It may be the speakers or having to do very long speaker wire runs but the sound is not crisp and individual instruments get lost in the mix.

I understand the desire to have in-ceiling speakers for home theater systems in small rooms but would recommend that people get external speakers in sound enclosures and be able to mount them in the best locations for the best sound. You can drive an in-ceiling or in-wall speaker with sufficient power from a amplifier but there is an inevitable increase in distortion that goes hand in hand. Not a concern for a whole house music system but not a good approach in terms of total dollars spent for a music listening room or dedicated home theater room if sound quality is very important to you.

In those environments it is better to even go to small mid and upper range speakers and a woofer rather than try to use in-ceiling or in-wall speakers and be disappointed afterwards with the sound and speakers and speaker holes in your ceiling or walls. With speakers the sound quality of your system is fixed and upgrading amps or receivers is going to be a waste of money so if you are going to scrimp don't do it with the speakers.

For the price I have been very impressed with the overall sound quality of these speakers as part of my home theater. I didn't want to invest big bucks for my basement theater and these speakers have delivered great sound for the buck. I stayed with the compatable fr4ont channel speakers, in-wall speakers and sub woofer.

"Good surround speakers" 2010-04-09
By A. W. Pickens (Texas)
I've had these speakers for about a year now. They're high quality, easy to install, and pretty decent sound. These are good surround speakers. You have to remember that when you set your expectations for their sound. They work well and I haven't had any problems out of them, but they're pretty limited in their sound field. They do the job well for surround speakers, but if you have powerful towers, you may want to consider the 8" version of these. These have served me well, but at times get a bit overpowered by the front 3 speakers and the sub.

Again, no real complaints. Good quality, decent sound, but just remember you're buying a 6.5" speaker.

"Easy and adequate for surrounds" 2010-04-06
By Tom H (South Eastern PA)
I wouldn't use these as mains or anything, but as inexpensive in-ceiling surround speakers they are perfect. I have an open attic above my listening area so these were even easier to install than if there was a floor above. The downside to that however is that there is no cabinet for the speaker. If you put it in a wall or in a ceiling where there is a floor above it, the wall cavity becomes the cabinet. If you put as I did backed into an attic space, you lose the resonance that a cabinet would supply unless you built one around the speaker. So, with that in mind, I've not heard these speakers properly encased, but since I am just using them for surround sound speaker, the upper mids given off by the woofer and everything from the tweeters is sufficient. Maybe someday I'll decide to box them in from behind... but I doubt I'll ever bother.

One thing I did notice however is the aimable tweeter, while it seems necessary to get the sound where you want it, doesn't really direct the treble as directly as you'd expect. It's still a domed tweeter so the sound radiates 360 around the tweeter... Aiming it just sorta maybe gives you a bit of a sweet spot.

For $100 for the pair, you can't go wrong.

Oh yeah, I did have some difficulty getting the grills off without elongating a tiny hole. They say to use a corkscrew or paper clip, stick it in a grill hole and pull the grill off. It works, but I did damage one of the tiny holes in the process. Not really noticeable, but it does sort of interrupt the smoothness of the speaker grill when the light hits it right. I understand why they did it that way - no visible mounting once the grill is in place - but maybe include a little tool in the packaging to pull the screen off without damaging it would be a nice idea.

"Not bad for the money" 2010-02-17
By M. Santina (Phoenix, AZ)
I bought these speakers to replace a speaker that had started to go out. I had a set of Infinity ERS110 speakers on my patio, 1 of them started getting static (6 years old) so I did some research and bought these Polk speakers. I bought the pair just incase the other Infinity goes out. Ease of installation was perfect, it fit into the existing hole and I had it in place and playing music in less than 5 minutes. The problem is that it is very thin sounding compared to the Infinity. I left the working Infinity in place and installed 1 Polk in the broken Infinity's place. You can definitely tell the difference between the 2 speakers. The Infinity is much louder and has more base. Clarity on the Polk is good, I just wish it had more substance. As they are outside speakers I am not too concerned, I'm sure my neighbors will appreciate the quieter sounds, but if I was installing them inside for my TV or stereo I would definitely spend more money and choose another brand or style. Delivery was excellent, I bought them on Monday morning and they were delivered on Tuesday night.

"Great Set of Surround Speakers" 2010-04-02
By J. Julian (Sulphur Springs, TX)
I ordered these in-ceiling speakers to be my rear surround sound speakers. They come with an installation template and instructions that make the installation a breeze, even for an amateur. Do not forget to run a high grade speaker wire to these speakers from your receiver. The sound quality is great. No regrets!

"Easy Install" 2010-03-14
By Douglas M. Edstrom (Atlanta, ga)
Put these in a wall that I added in my living room. Were so easy to install a child could do it. Front grills on these speaker are somewhat difficult to remove but can be done with a small paper clip or safety pin. Sound quality is plenty good for rear surround speakers however would not use for front speakers. For the price I would say these are great speakers.

"Great value" 2009-11-20
By M. Holder (USA)
